Why do carbonated beverages go flat?

The reason carbonated beverages go flat has to do with the ionic content of the carbon used in the carbonation process. Under pressure, carbon atoms ionize to an unstable state which makes it fizz when exposed to the atmosphere. After sufficient exposure, the ions return to their normal state and the 'fizz' is gone.
